Life Groups Discussion: From Here To There - Part 4
Cup 2: Renewing Your Mind
1. Icebreaker
Can you think of a habit or way of thinking you picked up growing up that you didn't realize was shaping you until much later?
Is there an area of your life right now where you know where you're at — but you just can't figure out how to get to where you want to be?
What does "there's more to life" mean to you personally right now?
2. Saved but Still Messed Up
The sermon made the point that you can be saved — on your way to heaven — and still be messed up in your soul. Why is that an important distinction to understand?
The Israelites witnessed miracle after miracle and still didn't trust God. How is that possible — and where do you see yourself in that story?
What's the difference between your spirit being transformed at salvation versus your soul (mind, will, and emotions) being renewed over time?
3. Identifying the Pattern
The first step to renewing your mind is identifying a pattern. What's a pattern in your life — even a "functional" one — that might not actually be godly?
The sermon described living "functionally dysfunctional" — getting by, even being rewarded, but still missing something deep down. What does that look like in real life?
Behind every behavior is a belief. What belief do you think might be driving a pattern you're currently dealing with?
4. The Story You're Hearing
The sermon talked about the internal dialogue running in our heads — stories like "I'm not enough," "nobody loves me," "I'll never get over this." Which of those lies lands closest to home for you?
Why is it so hard to recognize these thought patterns, especially when we've been living with them for a long time?
Second Corinthians 10:5 says to take every thought captive and bring it to Christ. What does that practically look like on a Tuesday afternoon when the thoughts start?
5. What Does God Say?
The sermon pointed out that only about 5% of Christians read their Bible daily — and that any thought you don't take captive will eventually take you captive. How does that land with you honestly?
Why is knowing what God's Word says the key to fighting back against the lies — and what happens when we try to fight without it?
Is there a specific area of your life right now where you need to find out what God actually says — and replace the story you've been telling yourself?
6. Main Thesis & Action (Discipleship Focus)Core Idea: Freedom isn't behavior modification — it's identity transformation. The door is already unlocked. Jesus made a way. But you have to recognize the patterns, identify the lies, take the thoughts captive, and replace them with what God says. You'll never think your way out — you have to get into His Word and let Him renew the way you see yourself, Him, and the world.
What's one pattern, thought, or story you've been living with that God might be asking you to name and bring to Him today?
What does your current relationship with God's Word look like — and is it enough to fight with?
What is one step you will take this week toward freedom?
Start reading a Proverb a day or a chapter of John every day
Identify one lie you've been believing and find a scripture to replace it
Bring a specific thought captive — write it down, then write what God says about it
