Devoted - Book of Jonah | Week 6

Icebreaker

  • The "Mercy or Justice" Choice: Share a lighthearted pet peeve where you wish you could enforce strict rules vs. one where you always hope for a pass (e.g., getting a speeding ticket, someone cutting you off in line, or returning a late library book). How easy is it for us to want grace for ourselves but strict consequences for others?

  • Discussion Questions

    1. Understanding Jonah’s Frustration: In Jonah 4:1–4, Jonah was furious that Nineveh repented and received God’s mercy. Knowing the brutal history between Assyria and Israel, why was it so hard for Jonah to extend grace to his enemies? Have you ever struggled when someone who hurt you or others received kindness or second chances?

      • (Optional Sub-Question): How does acknowledging the genuine pain behind our hurt help us understand why extending grace can feel so difficult?

    1. The Wedge of Unforgiveness: The sermon highlights how harboring unforgiveness creates spiritual distance between us and God and distorts how we view other people. In what ways have you experienced unforgiveness holding you back spiritually or changing your perspective toward someone?

      • (Optional Sub-Question): When you catch yourself viewing someone strictly through the lens of their offense, what warning signs let you know unforgiveness is taking root?

    1. Aligning with God’s Heart: God asks Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry?" (Jonah 4:4). Reading Ephesians 4:31–32 alongside Jonah's story, what is one practical step you can take this week to choose forgiveness and align your heart with God’s compassion?

      • (Optional Sub-Question): How can we distinguish between forgiving someone from our heart versus re-establishing trust or boundaries with them?
